Choosing Recommenders

by Mouradm » Tue Dec 20, 2011 11:45 pm
Hi,

I am applying to Anderson school of business and I am not sure whom should i choose for as the second recommender.

The first recommender is my direct supervisor, and the second recommender can be a manager in the engineering department while i work in the finance, or a the supervisor on a sustainable development project in an isolated community in Brazil, this project was for 1 month.

Personally i want to present something new, that's why i am more inclined for the project's supervisor, however i am not sure how will the school perceive the 1 month period although we worked very hard on the project.

Thanks

Hmm, good question. How much can a guy really see about you in one month?? If he would have a lot to say I would say he is just as good.
I would say the deciding factor should be rather: Who would give you a more excited glowing recommendation? You can always work the recommendations in a way that two supervisors can write different things even if its from the same job, so that doesn't necessarily nullify your other choice...

Hi Mouradm,

The biggest problem with recommendations is that, most often, individuals select people who can't respond fully. In order for your letters to be as effective as possible, you should look at engaging only effective recommenders. Selecting a recommender whose letter is ineffective or who appears dubious about your qualifications may raise doubts about your rest of your application. If this person can represent you well in the letters then no harm. However ideally you should try to get recommendations from someone you have worked for a significant time or have worked closely with.
