Adding weight to application

by FoldedEarth » Tue Dec 20, 2011 6:31 am
I was giving final touches to my SOP today; when, suddenly, an intriguing question popped up in my mind, which has been titillating my nerves thereafter.

I am quite proficient in the arts of creative writing and story telling, and wanted to write my application the same way. But, some of my friends (after seeing the drafts)suggest that it won't be wise to follow such approach; instead they ask me to write the application in a more traditional and thoroughly professional manner.

Now, at the verge of submitting my candidature, I feel utterly confused and unsure on what approach will be wiser for developing my SOP

Moreover, I have horrendously been involved in Cultural and Extra curricular activities throughout my small but creative life, and believe that my most favorable chance of getting admits from my dream schools will depend on how I project of my creative/management side across the table. But, again, people tell me that, while accessing a candidate, the B Schools primarily look for people with high GMAT scores and academic successes while deciding the fate of a candidate.

Can Creative outlook and Extra-curriculars add weight to ones' MBA application?

Thanks & Regards

Definite yes..
GMAT, acads and other credentials do matter, but not to an extent that you might face rejection based just on these criteria. But you do need to maintain a fine balance between actually getting the scores and projecting them (basically market yourself). So, your creative skills might take you through.

As far as SOPs are concerned, I will not fancy myself to give an advice to you on the subject, as I too am contemplating on researching schools and starting my applications!

Yes, absolutely, be CREATIVE. This helps a LOT. Not at the expense of course of writing what you have to. Meaning no need to go too wacky on the CONTENT, but use your creativity for style and form. If you are good at it, it's like having a leg up or two...

Hi FoldedEarth,

You need to define a fine balance between the two approaches. That would make your application creative alongside telling your story without sounding poetic. All aspects play important role academics, work and beyond.
