First Job Choice for BSchool: Engineering or IT Consultant

Hi Everyone,

I'm a senior graduating from a top engineering university with an Mechanical Engineering background.

I'm currently fielding offers to go to Accenture as a Systems Integration Analyst and to Petroleum companies (Chevron, Exxon) as an engineer.

I am trying to think ahead and see what would prepare me best for a top 15 business school down the line.

I haven't thought to if I want to do consulting post MBA or just management in an tech firm, but the MBA is for certain in my career pathway.

I am not too sure of how an SI Analyst or an Engineer would look to a business school (with all extra curriculums and GMAT aside).

If anyone has any insight or opinons, i would really appreciate it.

Personally I prefer consulting (I am a consultant myself) as it opens you up to multiple experiences. With that said, it really depends on your opportunities as an engineer and your ability to grow prior to an MBA.

Hey Jeff!

This may sound kind of touchy feely, but you should take whichever job sounds more interesting and stimulating to you. Either role will likely give you the opportunity to demonstrate leadership and teamwork skills, but you will excel in whichever role you most enjoy. Then, you'll have great stories to put in your essays on top of great work experience. Make sure that you not only think about the role but the larger company culture as well.
