Hello!
I just joined this forum a few days ago and this is my first post. I've been studying for the GMAT for several months. Since I'm not a native Engish speaker I focused on the verbal section of the exam. Unfortunately, because of my job I just have time to study on weekends so I started my preparation at the end of 2010. Three months ago I finally decided to start my prep for the Quant Section (I think I understimated it.. and it was a huge mistake) and scheduled my test for December 2nd. I spent the last month reviewing math concepts and two weeks before the tests I decided to take the GMATPrep exams and got the following scores:

GMAT Prep 1: 680 (44Q 38V)
GMAT Prep 2: 690 (43Q 41V)

Although I was not that happy with those scores (I was looking for a 700 or 710), I was pretty sure that I could be able to get at least a decent score (like the ones from my GMAT Prep tests). However, after finishing the exam I was really surprised when my score showed up.. a dissapointing 620 (42Q 33V). I was shocked.. I couldn't believe that I dropped more than 5 points in verbal!

I'm planning to apply on the January round to some schools (top 20 - 30) so I'm going to retake the exam on January 3rd. I'm a little bit scared because I'm not sure about what happened. Should I trust GMAT Prep scores? Are they usually accurate indicators of your performance on the real test?

I know that I'll have to improve my quant score (42 is also pretty dissapointing..) but it was always my main weakness.. but now I'm scared about the verbal section, I never expected to get such a low score in that section.

Do you think it would be possible to improve my quant to 46-47 in one month? What do you think about my verbal scores (GMAT Prep and real test)?

Thank you in advance for your advice!

The GMAT prep scores are generally pretty accurate but because of the adaptive nature of the exam you can get questions that are more difficult for you and that can change your score. You may have also gotten a bit of test anxiety and had a problem on the real exam.

As far as improving your scores in math I would focus on techniques that can speed up the time it takes to do difficult questions while eliminating possible simple errors. That can free up time for you to think more thoroughly through difficult math questions. It would also be good to analyze any specific areas that you are weak in and work on those to continue to improve your score.
