Profile Evaluation

by Scorpion82 » Sat Nov 19, 2011 10:49 am
Hi Stacy,

I would like you to evaluate my profile.

I am 29 from Pakistan but have spent all my life in United Arab Emirates.
GMAT 1(2006) : 590/65% (Q: 47/81%, V: 25/37%, AWA: 5.0/61%)
GMAT2 (2008): 690/90% (Q: 48/85%, V: 37/82%, AWA: 5.0/61%)
TOEFL : 106 (IBT) , Can improve my score easily as I has scored 112 in my attempt in 2008. Current score was mainly because of poor quality of testing centre.

Did my basic education in UAE and was ranked amongst top achievers in UAE in Grade 10 and 12 exams.
Undergraduate in Computer Science from one of the best Engineering University in Pakistan with top grades and graduated with distinction (Ranked 2nd).

Affiliate member of Association of Chartered Accountants (UK) and am allowed to practice as a qualified accountant/auditor.

Work Exp: 6.5 yrs of work experience with 2 large National banks in UAE. Currently working as an Assistant Relationship Manager in Corporate Financing/Banking department; promoted twice in last 5 years. My current employer is one of the largest Bank in Middle East. The Bank was formed with the merger of 2 large local banks and I was part of the bank when this transformation happened.
Member of Pakistan Business Council in UAE, participated in some fund raising activities organized by them as well as my employer. Active sportsman, captained a school sports team and was a member of University Cricket team.

I have filed for US immigration through my spouse ( I am married with a kid) and may get an immigration towards the end of 2012.

I am mainly looking at UT Austin & UCLA. Though I had intentions to apply to Harvard, Wharton, Sloan (MIT) and Booth(Chicago) but I am not sure if my GMAT score and insufficient community services can give me a fair chance at these schools.

I seek your views on following.
1.Is my profile good enough to apply to the top tier schools?
2.Do I need to redo TOEFL?

Thanks

Dear Scorpion82,

TOEFL scores are only good for 2 years, so depending on when you scored the 106, you might need to retake it. Each school has a minimum required on the TOEFL, so I encourage you to verify what it is for any school you consider. It is possible you are at/above it, but you will want to check before expending resources on an application.

Your 690 GMAT is in the competitive range for any MBA program. Whether or not you are competitive is a different question as your admissions evaluation is holistic. Thus you need to assess your overall profile in relation to each program. If you feel the rest of your profile balances out a below average GMAT and makes a compelling case for admission, then having 1-3 top tier schools on your list is appropriate. Of course, your target list should be a mix of reach, reasonable and safety programs to give yourself the best probability of being in business school by Sept. 2012.

Good luck,
Lisa
