The first (trenches) ............ (yields) is wrong. Eliminate B and D.

'having been cut' in C is wrong.

Between A and E,

'evidence for' is wrong in this context and it is also lengthy in general. E seems the best pick.

IMO E.

yields is wrong in B and D
having been cut is wrong in C
were arising is wrong in A as it speaks about past event.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.
