D is quoting a list of four people here namely the author, Melville, the poet, and Whitman. It changes the original sentence which talks about only two people.

Choice D changes the question to 3 people: Author,Melville , and Whitman

I agree with cyrwr1 -- grammatically, D lists three people. One would expect "the author Herman Melville" in the initial position.
