To meet the rapid rising market demand for fish and seafood, suppliers are growing fish twice as fast as their natural growth rate, cutting their feed allotment by nearly half and raising them on special diet.

(A) their natural growth rate, cutting their feed allotment
(B) their natural growth rate, their feed allotment cut
(C) growing them naturally, cutting their feed allotment
(D) they grow naturally, cutting their feed allotment
(E) they grow naturally, with their feed allotment cut

confused with
C/D IMO: D
Hey GmatKiss - we think D too - here's how we see it:

The comparison is to the suppliers growing them -- meaning, the suppliers farming them, or taking control of the conditions of growth -- versus Mother Nature doing so, which is how "they" (the fish) naturally grow. Yes, it's possible that suppliers could "grow" them under natural conditions, but that's not how we think of it and it's not how it would be expressed.

Just our own interpretation!

IMO A

My guess is that Twice as fast can be used with some sort of a numerical value ? So it should be either A or B

Gosh, kdraj, now you got us thinking... first instinct was to dismiss A because it just sounds off... now we're looking at it again and second-guessing - hate it when that happens! But we're gonna stick with D. It seems like there's some type of mismatch between "are growing" and "natural growth rate" in the comparison -- though we cannot articulate what the problem is with it! Just seems like the second one needs to be a verb, not a noun. Don't know if that's an official rule though.

choice D looks good. Parallelism is also maintained..cutting... raising

In A, growth rate can't be twice as fast, it can be twice as high

growing them naturally doesn't make much logical sense. You 'let them grow naturally'
