a) Rather than accept the conventional wisdom that the earth was flat, Christopher Columbus was sent by the king and queen of Spain to see if he could reach India by traveling west.

c) Instead of accepting the conventional wisdom that the earth was flat, Christopher Columbus sailed west to see whether he could reach India, having been sent by the king and queen of Spain.

"Rather than, Instead of" state that two things are being compared and they need to be parallel...Here the things that are compared are accept...and sent

a) "he could reach" PRONOUN ERROR......"IF" ERROR as it can be used only as "IF X then Y"

c) ???? how to eliminate this/keep this

IMO B

Rather than accept is incorrect
So is Instead of accept

Rather than accepting and Instead of accepting would be correct.

So it cannot be A, and D

C is awkward, in any case the sentence intends to say that christopher columbus was sent by the king and queen of spain to india by sailing west. C does not convey this.

B is best in conveying this meaning according to me.
