scores slipping - can moderators help?

by resilient » Sun Apr 27, 2008 8:14 pm
I have been dealing with manhattan gmat and scoring over 40 in their math exams and dropped from a 41 verbal to a 36.

I took the powerprep exam today and got a 600. This is not enough and not at all representative of my capabilities. Instead of just doing another exam, I want to know where and how I can fix this in the most efficient way. I have been scoring around 85% hit rate on og and dont understand how the scores can drop. I have been studying very hard and have a good handle on the exam. I seriously am questioning th evalidity of the latest gmatprep cat! THe problem is somewhere that I cannot see. Can anyone help?

I do understand the swing in scores from manhattan gmat but there is a steady decrease in scores. I noticed that in verbal I got 31/41 correct and was never able to really break into the harder questions. However, I do remember them being a bit familiar.

To add more spice to this whole situation. In review of this latest GMATPREP CAT, atleast half of the mistakes were only 1 step from correct. In other words, these wrong answers could have been easily avoided. In the meantime, I will go over all mistakes even though they arent midn boggling and get ready for a mgmat cat exam this time!

Well, if you have been studying regularly then I see no reason for your score to drop other than external factors. I remember while I was studying for my GMAT my scores used to drop in tests which I had not given in the most "ideal" situation. Has there been a change in the atmosphere in which you have been giving the tests, have you been under any stress these are some external factors that do affect your scoring pattern. Has anything else changed in the last few days that you can connect to the drop in scores?. A 85% hit rate is pretty good, it suggests that the reason for your marks slipping could be something other than academic reasons.

I am also a little curious about the questions you have been getting wrong. You say that they have been correct for the most part and that you have been getting it wrong in the last few steps. I would suggest you to keep a error log, i.e jot down the mistakes you have made in each question and also the type of questions you have been getting wrong. Use this error log to look for a pattern, if any, and also go through it before each exam to make sure you don't repeat them again.

Just took the gmatprep and received 600 (36q and 36v) this is not good and pretty dissapointing. After taking a day off, I am not so annoyed. THis is not even close to my capabilities. I dont know if there is a difference between the gmatprep and powerprep CAT. I took the GMATPREP. BUt there is good news even though I had a bad score. ALmost all my mistakes could have been easily avoided.

Quantitative:
Need to work on coordinate geometry (ony geometry weakness)
WOrd problems- must read every words, understand full contenct and question being asked.

Hastiness is a huge weakness i.e. missed keyword in question (three questions), missed sign, wasn't alert and let simple tested rule slip by (two questions)

and only completely stumped 3 times.

Verbal: I made my weakness in SC and CR improve but missed every single inference question on rc. IF i got the inference questions correct, I would have had a perfect score for RC.

I am wondering if this gmatprep exam was a fluke!

I do need to make one more point, I was taking the exam in way too loud. lesson learned!

Instead of posting the same message in two separate threads, can you instead just post to one. If you really really want to get the attention of the new "subject line" then you can create a new post and link back to the original thread (I'm referring to the "Adventures of 650 score to a 700 score" thread). That way, not only you but also moderators can clearly see what other moderators are saying. This is important because one moderator may see something that another did not and can point that out.
