I just gave my GMAT on 03.10.2011 and I'm happy to be in 700+ pool...although this wasn't the target score but I'm content.
My journey for GMAT started last year late Dec. I'm not very dedicated kind of person..my prep was on-off sort of...During all this I've been through books:
1. Princeton Review Cracking the GMAT
2. OG12
3. Manhattan SC Guide (twice really helpful)
4. Powerscore CR Bible
5. Few ques from OG10 Verbal
and ~250 ques of 1000SC... few online tests and free lessons on various sites.
Earlier it was tough for me to complete verbal section within time limit. Then finally, I came across a strategy that worked for me to maintain my timing for Verbal..
1min each SC ques.
2min each CR ques
4min each RC passage
1min each RC ques.
Quant wasn't the problem ever, although in real test I got stuck in one ques for like 10-12min and then I tried to be little fast and that's where I missed my 51.
Verbal was the real problem since starting for me. I used to get ~25 so I tried whatever I could but I think OGs and Manhattan's SC worked best for me. Go through multiple times (if one is not sufficient) build your concepts and test it on OG questions also don't forget to go through all the explanations in OG when you solve the question. While in real exam I thought I'm doing good (although it helped me not lose my confidence) but apparently it seems I wasn't.
My score in practice tests varied a lot even in last days of prep.
GMAT Prep1 - 610 (first test before starting anything)
GMAT Prep2 - 740
Princeton free test - 700
Kaplan Free test - 710
GMATPrep1 - 680
GMATPrep2 - 660
Princeton free test2 - 690
GMATPrep2 again - 710
GMAT - 710
One more suggestion if You can afford to take a little time off of your regular job/other responsibility for full time prep try it.. it worked for me although I wish I'd have realized this earlier.
Regarding AWA - I followed the standard template. I have only tried writing essay once had I have tried a little more I'd have been more comfortable during real exam while writing AWAs.
And at last I'd like to thank Beat The GMAT and its members, I have learned a lot from success stories and this forum is very resourceful and it has helped me a lot to achieve 700+. Thank you all.
Let me know if I can be of any help.
