Question about essays dealing with reason for wanting a MBA

I know I want a MBA simply because I am not happy working as an accountant and I want to shift my career in a different direction. I'm currently between 3 different ideas and I can't seem to pick just one.


1) Working as a business consultant. I've always had an interest in traveling and working with different companies that need improvement.

2) Find a program that specializes in marketing and eventually break into the games industry. I had a chance to speak with the director of marketing for EA Sports and since then my interest has peaked in marketing.

3) Or continue my studies into entrepreneurship.


I'm not asking for anyone to help me pick a direction, I know that only I can make that choice. However, I know that schools prefer their applicants to have an idea of what they want to do already in mind. I can't just write in my essay that I'm interested in all 3 can I? Surely that will cause them to doubt my readiness.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You are correct. And I'm afraid you are gonna have to choose ONE and one only. Ideally it will be one in which you have experience in, cause then you can build a stronger case for yourself.

If you still aren't sure, consult with someone. And if that doesn't work, flip a coin, or roll a three-sided die


Once you have chosen, to answer the question about your REASONS, is because you have lacks. There are things you still NEED to get to your goals and ONLY an MBA can get you there!

Unfortunately I have little to no experience in ANY of these. The economy being what it is, it has been hard to even get an internship let alone a job. The only experience I can think of for these are as follows:

1) I started doing some freelance business consulting for small businesses in my area. I've worked with a personal trainer and his small company. Basically, I helped with marketing materials and customer retention.

2) In terms of marketing, I have little experience (unless you count the materials I made for a client once). However, I'm extremely knowledgeable about the games industry. I wrote my 2 senior theses on the entertainment software industry and wrote a business plan based on distribution as well.

3) Concerning entrepreneurship, I've written two business plan but neither of which I have launched due to the economy. One was a senior thesis which had offers to launch but the competition was too strong to compete.

Would any of those actually count as experience? I know I'm scrapping the bottom of the barrel here but I can only work with what I have around me (if that makes any sense).

Josh to put things into perspective:

FAR more important than WHICH one you choose, choose ONE! Secondly, since you don't have any directly related experience, choose any one you want, but still when you write your career essay don;t just throw away your accounting experience saying "that's crap", write it into the story, showing us the benefits you would get from having this experience. And if you ask me, out of the three choices, accounting is closest to consulting, given that the sort on number crunching you are doing there will likely be far more useful in consulting than in marketing or entrepreneurship which are numbers light.

Well Jon I think you helped me make my decision. Part of the reason I want to get away from accounting is because I'm slowly starting to discover that I'm not a numbers guy. I'm more of a creative person and I think Marketing/Entrepreneurship will be a better road for me.
