Discussion about 2 supernovas => we have to use larger & smaller => A, B, D out
C - does not use any noun/pronoun after smaller. In absence of noun/pronoun after smaller, it is not clear what the 3rd clause 'that has...universe' modify.

In C, it refers to the most recently discovered not the smaller one and this changes the meaning.

(A) the most recently discovered is the largest, but it is the small one ... neither most nor largest must be used between two things [use comparative vs superlative]. Moreover the small one is not parallel to the largest

(B) the one most recently discovered is the largest, but it is the small one ... same as A

(C) the most recently discovered is larger, but it is the smaller ... most is incorrect, comparative must be used.

(D) the more recently discovered one is the large one but the small one ... awkward and redundance of one

(E) the more recently discovered is the larger, but it is the smaller one
