In the Pursuit of MBA in one of the Big 10s

by shray » Wed Sep 21, 2011 10:20 pm
Hello Everyone
I have been contemplating if my dreams are a little too big, n hence i'm here to get a reality check.

i'm aged 23, with 2 years of valuable experience of heading my own Retail Company as a Director in India.
I completed my course and graduated back in 2009 with a degree in business management specializing in Finance. My CGPA Score is 3.45( Which i'm not sure is good, ok or bad). Back then, studying n pursuing a career wasn my priority.(i regret)

Alongside my business i have completed n cleared Level 1 in CFA and currently working hard towards the next level due next june.

I have not given my GMAT yet. I would be in Due course of time and saying that i wouldn't be settling for any score under 700(i hope this would suffice). I am Particularly interested in INSEAD for my MBA in Finance.

Do you think 2 years( by the time id be applying 3years) of work ex at the managerial level would suffice?
is my GPA a let down?
Does CFA add value?
700+ GMAT score, good enough?

thanks for your time.
cheers

GPA is not a let down, its fine.

INSEAD says this clearly
we advise candidates to aim for a score at or above the 70-75th percentile for both the quantitative and verbal sections of the GMAT
So aim for post 700

Average work ex for INSEAD is 5 years with range being 2-10 years. So you need to present yourself really well.

Add a few good colleges, there are other good 1 year courses available to make sure that you get a call.

It depends. How big is your retail company? how much turnaround? how many people?
If you can show a relatively good amount of success, that maybe two years is enough for you.
The CFA is less significant than your goals and the stories you will be able to present. Also take into consideration your grades, your volunteer work, your extra curriculars.

Thanks for your reply.

Well the company of mine has a Turnover of around 3 million USD Pa.
Employed over 100 people (skilled and non-skilled)
Along with this i am a partner of another retail firm (fairly small as of now)
With a turnover of around 500,000 USD Pa.
Do you think this would suffice for the required work ex criteria?

i was really rooting that CFA would add some value, since it is a competitive course specialising in finance.
Well My Goal is to excel in the field of finance, so wouldn't CFA be considered a piece in the bigger picture?

Thanks

Very good news about the company size! Plus being involved in a second business. Also very excellent stuff! You may not be aware of this, but being an already proven successful entrepreneur is one of the BEST profiles you can present to an Adcom? Why? Because a) You have already proven success b) Because small family companies/startups become tomorrows Facebooks.

So, in the meanwhile, just do your best on your GMAT, and drop us a line when you are ready. We'd be happy to help.
