Wish to apply to Tepper and Stern

by adefor » Fri Sep 16, 2011 9:49 am
Hi,
I wish to apply to Tepper in their Technology Leadership specialization.
Can someone tell me what does Tepper look for in a candidate.
What would deem a candidate as a "fit" for Tepper?

Same question for NYU Stern for their Management of Technology and Operations specialization.

Thank you!

Since its Tepper, definitely good analytical capabilities. It should reflect somewhere in GPA, extra certficate, Work Ex etc.

This track of tepper is totally in lines of preparing professionals who will lead technological innovations. So you must have a background in technology.

Average undergraduate GPA: 3.3
Average GMAT: 670
GMAT Mid 80 percent : 620-730
Average years of work experience: 5

Well, the thing is to be more than just a "Techie". There are like a billion tech candidates out there, and only some are gonna make it to the top. Things that help: side entrepreneurial projects, leadership at work, someone who takes a LOT of initiative, getting promoted faster and more often than your peers, getting the best evaluations from your boss. Hopefully you have at least some of these, if not ALL.

NYU Stern has a reputation of looking for profiles with

General
1. Good amount/quality of work experience
2. If you are interested in NGO/non profits or showcase your desire for that...
3. If you are very specific about finance and trading and want to work in NY
4. Pride and self-made characteristics is one thing which many consultants would agree is something as a stern-attraction

Specific
Be very specific, almost forceful(passion), to make people realise that you are interested in this particular course and nothing else...the steps would be to source a thought that you are interested in Tech/ops and then in this very course.

Even in interviews they will ask you that how would you pick your college...the emphatic answer should be the passion for technology intermingled with Sterns grand presence in NY

If you have more to ask about how to highlight more for Stern or Tepper, drop us a line.

In addition to what the others have said emphasize your fit with a small school for Tepper and NYC for Stern.

But part of fit is aligning your background, experiences, goals, interests and so forth with the academics, research, programs, clubs of each school. So, stating how you fit with Tepper or Stern is difficult without knowing the different aspects of your profile.

Best of luck,

A small suggestion about how to show fit( since everybody told you about what is fit)

1. Be a person who appreciates things to come...personable
2. clarity of thought...articulation in fewer words...
3. Be a person who knows the school...so do immense deep analysis and choose your favourite
4. choose your recommender well :)

Personal fit check
approach of learning : case study, hands on,
environment : super competitive or collaborative
culture : international, may be tilted towards a particular trade
specialisation: as in ur case technology, ops

regards
