Need admission assistance

I'm a Software Engnr with 4 years of work exp on software development. I've a very good academic standing. I wrote GMAT twice. First time I got a score of 470 with AWA 4.0. When I wrote GMAT for the second time , things were more worse. I got a 430 with an AWA score of 5.0. Now I've decided not to take the exam again. I worked hard to get a good score both the times. But I failed to succeed. Still , I've applied for 2 Canadian B Schools namely:
1.Simon Fraser University(Segal)
2.Ryerson MBA Toronto

I need advice on whether US B schools are my cup of tea? If yes what schools can I have a try? Also suggest me with any other canadian schools I can apply for.

I've given TOEFL and got a score of 100 in TOEFL iBT.

Hi Rahul,

GMAT is definitely only one piece of the admissions process, which is holistic. That being said, a score below 500 will likely raise some questions about academic potential within a program. Was the verbal section where the difficulty was?

US schools are a bit more expensive than Canadian schools. If you are planning to work in the US it may be worth the expense. In your case I think you will have more luck with some of the regional programs like Pepperdine or Pace - which do best in local recruiting. Therefore I would think about where you plan to be after school.

My login is not working so created one more. Thank you very much for the reply. You got it right!! First time I got 470(V23 Q32) and second time I got 430(V17 Q32).

I'm not particular on where to work after my MBA. Whether its US,Canada or India. Only I need make sure is that I get a good quality education and implement whatever I learn at my work place.

Please let me know if you have some more options for me in your mind.

Hi Rahul,

I might consider India also. The verbal score may not be as much of a consideration in your home country. Another option may be CEIBS in China - the school is not as established and therefore may be less competitive in terms of admissions but is actually fairly high in the international rankings.

In the meantime I would suggest taking a course like Manhattan GMAT to get your score more in the 500/600 range, that will make a huge difference for you.

I might look at the University of Manitoba and University of Ottawa. For both programs you'll still want to work on the GMAT.

Dear Rahul:

When evaluating any school, you should review the school's class profile to see where you fall. You should be able to find an average GMAT, GPA, work experience and age on the school's website and/or in its literature. If you are at or above the average on those dimensions, then it might be a good prospect for you. At that point, you will want to then evaluate the curriculum and placement to see if the school is a good match for what you want to do post-MBA. If you are below the average GMAT but pretty close (~30-50 points), then it might be worth a shot as long as you are a strong applicant on all of the other dimensions.

Also, I would have to concur with the advice Amy gave you previously. Retaking the GMAT again and getting your score above a 500 would make a difference for you.
