hi

i have written GMAT twice and got 590 , 580 respectively. I am not planning to give gmat again. Below is my profile.

GMAT 1 590
GMAT 2 580

CGPA 7.3/10

UG: Electronics and communication engg.

Work Exp: Working in an Indian IT company for the past 3 years. I have worked in a R&D kind of startup for Financial Inclusion in India. Started as a 2 member team with no clients. Currently we have most of the local banks as our clients in India and our team size has grown to 20. My job role involves managing my team with lots of client interaction.

Is it worth trying for an MBA in the US. If yes what are my chances and if not should i try in other countries?

Thanks

As you probably know, (unfortunately) these scores can automatically remove you from the race for the top B-schools - US or anywhere else. You can obviously try for schools lower down the list, but that would depend on your goals & if you can justify the investment.

My advise would be to understand why you are getting such a low score. I have seen people moving from 590 to 650-680, and there is really no reason why you can't do the same. I think your experience in a start-up could provide some good stories, but the GMAT needs to be sorted out first.

Good Luck!

Hi Pradyot,

I am sure what you are doing and have done w.r.t. financial inclusion will definitely be more significant in your application than your current scores. Either you can prepare once again and go ahead or target at B-schools ranked outside the top 100 (only if you are willing to settle for it).
Most importantly, ponder over what you want to do post your MBA right now.

If you can provide me more details regarding your preparation, then maybe another attempt can be deemed

In general most of the Indian applicants are from engineering background with a good 4-5 years of work experience. So you would need to differentiate yourself from others. Start thinking what makes you unique and what's that 'hook' that will be key to your application. Make sure you follow the 'show rather than tell' principle so that the admissions committee could really understand your strengths and differentiating factors. Unfortunately you won't be able to apply to top schools with your GMAT score. Can you tell us if you have any particular schools in mind?

Hi

Make a list of colleges which you think you will love to get in.

Analyse the possibilities of financing your MBA.

Work hard on your essays and give it a shot.

People have got into good colleges with smart preparation. Its always worth a shot.

Best of Luck.

Thanks for the replies.

I have studied the OG twice and used the MGMAT materials. The problems is my work and travel demands 13 hours a day on average. So getting to study is really hard.

My IELTS score is 7.5 ( with min >= 7 in each section)

Financing my MBA would not be a problem as it will be taken care by my parents.

The colleges i would love to go are

Eller College of management (mba/ms in mis)
University of Cincinnati
University of Southern Carolina
Michigan State University
MAYS Business school

I do understand that the average GMAT scores for the above programs are higher than 590. But say if i apply to these five programs do i stand a chance of getting an admit in at least one??. Also if you feel i can apply, which round should i apply.

Please do let me know any other colleges with Ms in MIS / MBA programs which you feel is more gettable for me.

Thanks for helping me out :-)

Have you considered some of the online courses that are reviewed here on BeatTheGMAT? Many of these courses offer free trials and money back guarantees if a certain score improvement is not achieved.

USC and Michigan State would be near impossible with that score. You might contact some of the other schools via email and ask directly how many Indians they have admitted with sub-600 scores to determine whether to expend the effort.

Good luck,
