Makes sense to me when i consider it a comma + ing modifier

E is also incorrect because of the timeline of events, "being freed" to "having been exonerated" is awkward. You have to be exonerated first, then freedom.

That may be true in and may "sound correct", but why choose E when C is more concise and nothing is wrong with it. On the GMAT, answers are consistently narrowed to 2-3 selections that seem correct, it's the small things such as wordiness or inconsistent timeline that set the wrong apart from the right.
