Four barrels of water have an average capacity of 8 gallons.
What is the maximum possible capacity of the smallest barrel if the median capacity of all four barrels is 10 gallons?
A. 1
B. 2
C. 3
D. 4

Why can it be A?

total capacity = 32 gallons.
median of 4 means avg of 2nd and 3rd.. thus 2+3 = 20
Thus 1 + 4 = 12.
thus max possible of smallest = 2. (largest has to be atleast 10)

why does 1 and 4 break into 2 and 10 and not 1 and 11?
