well here as would be appropiate if we were to write like this

by addin DO in the end we imply that genes jump in the same way as pearls jump

but without DO we imply they jump LIKE pearls so here we comare nouns only not their action

hope it's now clear

well deniz it's so hard for me to explain buddy coz i myself am not very good at sc
actually meaning of 'as'='in the same way'
but yes i read in spidey's notes [that r availible on this website]
one example i read there is

my cat moves LIKE a lion stalking its prey

my cat moves AS[in the same way] a lion stalking its prey MOVES

i m actually not very comfortable while explaining but u can ur self read it there

cooldude has the right idea. here is the motivating rule behind his discussion, spelled out for all to see:

like goes with nouns (or their equivalents, such as pronouns and noun phrases). like does not go with clauses. ever.

as goes with clauses.

just to clear the air,
pearls mysteriously jumping...
is not a clause, because jumping is not a verb; it's a participle. if you want to know whether something is a verb, try it in a very simple sentence - just subject + verb (+ object, if the verb takes an object) - and see if the sentence makes any sense:
pearls jumping. --> not a sentence; therefore 'jumping' is not a real verb
pearls jump. --> legitimate sentence; 'jump' is a verb.
pearls jumped. --> legitimate sentence; 'jumped' is a verb.
etc.
