Profile Evaluation Request

by Surev » Tue Aug 30, 2011 7:32 am
Request all to provide comments on my profile and target schools.

Indian Male, Age 33
Undergraduate electrical engineering from an IIT
GMAT 710 (Q50, V37)
9+ years of experience including
- first 2 years at a small firm in the field of patent services
- Next 3 years as as entrepreneur in the field of patent services and consulting; the entrepreneurial stint did not turn out to be successful but was a great experience, hence had to get back to a job
- 9 months at a business research firm
- last 3+ years in the Intellectual Property (IP) analytics division of a Fortune 5 oil and gas firm based in India focusing on analysing new and existing technologies in the energy sector

Target schools: McCombs, Mays (TAMU)

Weaknesses:
1. Low Undergrad GPA (Can a 710 counter that?)
2. NO significant Extracurriculars, though I have somethings to show
3. Above average age for 2 year programs

I want to continue in the energy industry after MBA but would like to change my function from IP to something else like future energy evaluation, VC etc.

Any comments are welcome.

Regards,

Hey sir,
The two schools you chose should be good target schools for you (although you may want to add two more). Yes, your age is gonna be a bit of an "issue". an issue, but not a problem. Why? Because you CAN deal with it (and basically sort of have to). You need to convince the AdCom that a) It makes sense for you to do this MBA at this age and that you can get the added value you are looking for - basically you need have really good reasons b) You need to work hard to show them that you will FIT and fit WELL into the program. Keep in mind that there'll be lots of 24-27 year-olds, and you are in a different stage in your life, so convince them of that too and you should be all right.

Hi Jon - Appreciate your response. Another question that's troubling me is the returns on investment on a 2-year MBA at this stage of my career. Also there are not many one year MBAs that I find relevant going by my future plans and also most of one year MBAs do not have any financial aid.

Any comments?

That's a VERY good question also. It depends on lots of things. But let's put it this way - you are still at an age where going there, making new contacts, getting new knowledge, etc. can give you that LEAP you are looking for, if you feel like you are stagnating at work. If opens up a whole lot of possibilities. And you are a bit old, but not a granddaddy :)

As for one year MBAs, well there aren't that many in the States. If however you are open to living and working in Europe there are TONS.

Thanks again Jon. I was just wondering - are you aware of any resource that can help be carry out an ROI for my MBA at this stage. Something like:

Expenses:
1. My current salary (*2 for a 2-year MBA)
2. Course fees
3. Living Cost
4. Travel costs for international candidates
5. Loan to take care of any existing mortgages/loans for 2 years while you are studying
6. Any other expenses

Income:
1. Delta increase in salary after 2 years (compared to my current salary)
2. Summer internship earnings
3. Any other teaching assistantships etc.
4. ??

This would give me an idea as to where would I stand in terms of my finances immediately after completing my MBA and also a few years after that.

Would be interesting to create something like that if it does not exist

Hmmmm,
That's a very good question. And also a very good idea. :)
Here's a link for you:

Not surprisingly, many of the top schools are European given that they have one year programs.
