My profile:

by Bonesinger » Fri Aug 19, 2011 4:39 pm
About me: Undergrad GPA: ~3.1 (hard science), Haven't taken GMAT yet. Indian (born in us)

I'm entering my 3rd year in a tier 1 law school (3.3 gpa). I am majoring in Patents and Taxation. I have recently started my own company and I've been working on that for a few months. I also will be doing entrepreneurial work in my 3rd year with lots of technology start-ups as part of my school curriculum for IP Attorneys. Most of the courses I've taken in law school are corporate, tax, or IP/Patent related. I've already learned how to M&A work, Venture startups, corporations, patent applications, basically I know how to handle a business from the legal perspective whether its creation, taxation, IP, contracts etc... This is the role I have in my own business.

I'm interested in venture capitalism, consulting and helping inventors start up companies. I want to apply to business school but I honestly don't want to waste my time if I won't get in to a top school.

I've had a rough time in college thus my low gpa (last year was 3.7). I took some extra courses after so I can qualify for the Patent Bar exam, I've done well in them. I have been diagnosed with a few diseases that I've had to battle with and they greatly affected my ability to perform in college and law school but I've been able to manage them and get passed them. I've done well on the SAT and LSAT (95% and 90% respectively). Do I have a decent shot at a top school? I'm really only interested in Northwestern and Booth because my family lives there and my girlfriend is going to school this fall for her graduate program.

I'm not going to assume I will get a 700+ on the GMAT, I know its a tough exam; even if I get a 700+ will I even be competitive?

I should add that I want to go to business school to be able to learn the business side of running companies. I have learned a lot in law school and I would like to continue down this path; My favorite course was Business Planning, where we took fictitious clients and helped from forming a business entity to advisement on series funding, contract negotiation and the likes. I absolutely love this field and I want to learn everything there is about it!

Well, you know that the GMAT will be an important grade, so I won't go into that too deeply, other than to say that in your case, sue to your GPA it will be EVEN more important, to offest your GPA and PROVE that your are academically capable.

Secondly, a lot will hang upon how far you get with your business. The trick is you need to SHOW the Adcom that you can succeed in what you want. Now if your business is up and running and your on your way to making millions, "the proof is int he pudding" as they say. If you have no results to speak of, you may have a tough time going of it, because then your profile may start to look like one of an "eternal student". So the success in your entrepreneurial work, and the reasons for you abandoning your law career before starting it would play a large role in your application.

Hi Bonesinger,

Thanks for posting. One of the challenges you will have is showing an admissions team why you are interested in pursuing business school directly after having attended law school. This is going to be the first question that comes to their mind.

Regarding the GMAT, MBA.com provides 2 free official GMAT practice tests. You can take a practice exam to see how you currently score.

On a last note, do you have any work experience? Business schools typically look for 2 years of work experience.

Hope this was of help.

Cheers,

Conrad and the Stacy Blackman Team

Thanks for the information guys.

Since 2007, I've had a small consulting business where I streamline other small business' IT setups. It is a solo job that I do and I have a few clients. I recently started my own software company with 4 other partners, we are developing software in the healthcare field. This business we started in July. I know its in it's infancy stages so I don't rely on it to get me in.

I've decided to apply to B-school, but for 2013 admission. I am going to continue on my business.

My school has given me the opportunity to work in entrepreneurial start up companies and help guide them legally and in some business aspects. I get to do actual hands on work instead of sitting in a class room learning theoretical information and reading out of a textbook.

I want to gain more experience before I apply. I still want to go to a top school so this is a way to differentiate myself. I signed up for veritas gmat prep as well, I will go out a leisurely pace and take the exam maybe next year.

I want to go to B-school because I want to understand how to run a business from the B-side, I understand the legal side very well. One of my goals was to create a consulting business where I can help someone from the business and legal side, a 1-stop shop for setting up businesses, IP, tax, and accounting. (I can do all of these).

Hmmm, Well it's very good that you are starting a second business. This starts to put you in line for being a "serial entrepreneur" which is certainly a good profile. Now, I guess you will do this anyways because it's in your interest, but obviously growing the businesses as much as you can will be the thing (outside doing very well on the GMAT) that will help you most.
