by nishant1309 » Sat Aug 20, 2011 10:44 pm
Dear Folks,

Can anyboby please explain the meaning and interpretation of "Mid 80% (percentile) range" when talking about GMAT score or Salary as declared by B-Schools in their websites?

What does it actually indicates?

Hmm. Well if you give a wee bit more context we can be a bit more precise, but if your GMAT is in the mid-80 percentile range, it means you got a score that was ranked somewhere in the 80-90% range of the scores that people received for that year (putting you in a pretty good position)

Dear Frank,

Thanks for response!

Its not about my score (I've not taken yet!). Its a term that i usually find on school websites or bloomberg website, where they present the key stats of a school. I am not able to comprehend what actually it indicates. For example, refer this link on ISB website: https://www.isb.edu/PGP/2011Profile.Shtml

Under the header Age and GMAT, they have given a data in terms of "Mid 80% (percentile) range". At times, for few schools, even salary is presented in this form.

Could you please explain in light of above link??

Thanks,

Nishant

Yep. This means that 80% of the applicants got within that range, and than 20% got either above or below. This is often a more effective statistic than mean or median GMAT to show the range of normal scores that the school accepts, and it is also a good indicator of how important GMAT scores are to the school.

Thanks Frank!

For a range of 670 - 760 at ISB is to wide a range to really guess how much score i should target.

Well, i beliive the mid value 700-720 would be fair enough in this case.

Thanks!

Yep!
And what it does tell you is that they ARE interested in candidates who have varied GMAT profiles, meaning that other parts of your app carry more weight.

Best of luck to ya!
