R and S are the only 2 applicants for a short term job opening. R has more experience and if hired , would be paid 20 percent more per hour than S would be paid. S if hired would require 10 hours more than R to do the job.If either R or S were hired , total amount paid for the job would be $ 330. What would S's hourly wage be ? a) $ 11.00 b) $ 7.92 c ) $ 7.33 d) $6.60 e ) $ 5.50 Answer E

A cylinder tank with radius of the base 1 and height 2 is half full of water. If all the water is poured into another cylinder tank with height 1 and radius of the base 2, to what percent of its capacity will this new tank be filled? (A) 20% (B) 25% (C) 32% (D) 35% (E) 40% Answer B

Assume that the wage of S per hour is X.so that of R is 1.2X.
Assume that S did (Y+10) hours.so R did Y hours. According to the information above we can have the equation that X(10+Y)=330 & 1.2XY=330
To solve the X: XY=275 10X+XY=330 SO 10X=55 X=5.5
The wage of R per hour is 1.2X so 1.2*5.5=6.6
of S per hour is 5.5

Answer to Question no. 2

The volume of the first cylinder = pi*r^2*h = pi*1^2*2 = 2pi
The volume of the second cylinder = pi*r^2*h = pi*2^2*1 = 4pi

Therefore, the new tank should be filled to 2pi/4pi*100% = 50%

The answer should be 50%.

Question number 2 - The stem tells us that the first tank is half full. Volume = pi, but the tank only has pi gallons of water.

The second tank volume is 4 pi, so transferring the water makes the second tank 25% full - Answer B

For 1st question : why is not it possible solve it in this way ?

S hourly wage is $330 / X......(1)
R hourly wage is $ 330 / (x+10).......(2)
We know that R's hourlu wage is 20% more than S's.
So, (2-1) / 1 = 20 %
But it doesnt work= :(
The more you suffer before the test, the less you will do so in the test! :)

You have reversed the relationship. S requires ten hours more so S = $330/(x+10)and R = $330/x.

Then: 330/x = 1.2(330/(x+10). That will give you R's rate at $6.60 and S's rate at $5.50.
