Is this right time to commit to MBA?

by ragchi » Wed Jul 27, 2011 10:16 am
Hi,
I am a working professional who is on work visa (h1b).
I recently accepted admission into a part-time MBA in a second rung B-school. When i started the application process, the economy looked pretty good and recovering. i was pretty positive that it would continue to recover and there would not be any threat to my job (which is very important to keep me legally in US and also to fund my MBA) for next couple of years. If not for economy/recession, my job is pretty secure.
In a month's time my course begins and I will need to start paying fees. But looking at the current state of US economy (where everyday there is news of it getting deteriorated and double dip recession etc), am feeling nervous to proceed for the fear of having to drop out midway due to lack of funds to pay fees. There is no way i can pursue MBA without my present job. I am a bit confused whether to go ahead as planned or postpone the admission to next year. I want to know what others perceive about the economy for rest of the year and next year.
I would appreciate any suggestions and thoughts on this issue.
Thanks.

Hi,

You certainly are facing a tough decision. Do you feel your job isn't secure? Do you feel that taking courses part-time could jeapordize your job? While no one has a crystal ball and can predict the future of the US economy, most experts seem to agree that a change in the economy is not one that will happen overnight, but rather over the course of many years. You need to make a decision that you are comfortable with at this point in your life and career. Waiting for the economy to turn around might mean you miss the boat on obtaining your MBA.

Best,

Stacey

I could see why you are nervous. Macroeconomics is not a science, so it is hard to say. But you can only control what you can control. If you are on good standing with your boss/firm, can you try to have an open discussion with them about your part time MBA so that it is a factor if decisions need to be made down the road as to who stays? Have your performance reviews been solid?

Also, another key question is, let's say you start and get half way through. Would your program allow for you to take a leave if this scenario comes to fruition? If so, don't live in fear and go for it!
