I have a degree in political science, but I am very serious about pursuing a MBA. I was told that because of my lack of education and experience in business it would be hard for me to get accepted, regardless of my GMAT score. How true is this?! What are some things I should focus on to ensure this does not happen to me?!
Hello,
Business experience is more important than business education for an MBA - many and indeed perhaps most MBA applicants and students do not have prior formal business education. And some people successfully apply to MBA programs without actual business experience, but they are few. Such people may be doctors, lawyers, educators, computer engineers, military officers or others who have a specific reason for pursuing a business education - a specific relevant goal that requires it. And they also must demonstrate that they are making an informed decision to pursue a business education and career.
To summarize, it is not impossible to enter an MBA program with no business background, but it is not easy and such applicants face a a steep uphill climb to admission. A high GMAT will be a plus, but the burden is on you to articular clear goals, demonstrate why it is an informed decision, and construct a compelling case in your application.
