Well the answer is A.

stmt 1 : this gives the value of x^2 + y^2 in terms of xy. Hence it will cancel the common term xy in nume and denom and leave with an answer.

stmt 2: just the value of xy will not be able to eliminate both the variables and ence is not ok.
