Fuqua Admissions Chances

by ls1234 » Mon Jul 18, 2011 5:19 pm
Hey Stacy:

I was wondering if you could give me some feedback on my chances at Fuqua. My background is as follows:

Education

Duke Law School - 3.4 GPA
Large Public UG, Liberal Arts major - 3.9 GPA

Experience

Corporate law firm, 1 yr - worked on several successful deals, lead a small group of associates on projects, promoted once
Various public interest work during law school

GMAT

710

ECs

Fairly typical for a law student/liberal arts major - several community works projects, student organizations, etc.

I plan to apply ED, as being in Durham is important to me for family reasons. I understand that my work experience is pretty minimal, but I'm curious as to whether they would informally count my time in law school.

If possible, could you also give me some advice on my chances at Kenan-Flagley?

Thank you very much for your time.

Dear ls1234,

I think you have a chance at Fuqua, as well as many other programs in the NC area. Kenan-Flagler is a great program and one to also consider. The main questions in the minds of the admissions committee that you need to address in your application are why do you want an MBA and how do the MBA & JD fit together for your career goals. You need to present a solid rationale for going to business school at this point in your career.

Your time in law school will be neither viewed nor count as professional experience. Professional experience is defined as full-time work experience after receiving a bachelor's degree. So, if you did not work between your bachelor's and law school, then your amount of work experience is the time worked since you started full-time after law school. However, any work experience gained in college or law school, like internships, are considered in your evaluation for business school; thus be sure to include any work experience on your resume and in your application.

Good luck,
Lisa
