Triangle

by MBA.Aspirant » Wed Jun 29, 2011 8:45 pm
If a sandbox in the shape of a right triangle has a hypotenuse of "h" feet, an area of "a" square feet, and one leg of length "x" feet, which of the following is true?

A) x^2 - (4a^2)/(x^2) - h^2 = 0

B) x^2 + (4a^2)/(x^2) + h^2 = 0

C) x^2 + (4a^2)/(x^2) - h^2 = 0

D) x^2 + (2a^2)/(x^2) - h^2 = 0

E) x^2 + (2a^2)/(x^2) + h^2 = 0

Ans is (C)

Area of rt. triangele= a = 1/2 (x)(other perpendicualr side)
hence oteh side = 2a/x

using pythagorus theorem

x^2 + (4 a^2)/x^2 = h^2

Well, I thought the -h^2 is in the denominator :)

you can also solve it quickly by pluggin in:

x =3, a =6, h =5

Choice C: 9 + (4*36/9) - 25 = 0

clear C here.
third side = k = 2a/x.
