Profile Evaluation Request

by aditya.sood » Sat Jun 11, 2011 12:00 am
Hello

I am Aditya Sood. I have just completed my graduation in Engineering from IIIT Hyderabad and will be joining TATA CONSULTANCY SERVICES in the R&D Division. I understand that my zero work experience is a big deterrent for admissions to top MBA schools. However, I would be really obliged if you could evaluate my profile for London Business School Masters In Management Program, which is for recent graduates. Also, please let me know if there are any MBA programs that accept recent graduates.

10th Class: 92%

12th Class: 85%

College GPA: 8.3 (out of 10)

Degree: B.Tech with Honors on Electronics and Communication

Work Ex: Will be joining R&D labs of TCS shortly

Extra-Currics: Class Representative of my ECE batch in college for 2 years
Founding Team Member of my college newsletter
Working for a start up organization Ekjaa (Not for profit) which mobilizes funds for cash strapped NGOs and MFIs

Also, I would like to ask as to what are the factors that differentiate a Masters in Management Degree from an MBA ? How does one consider which will be better for him ? Is there a need for one to do an MBA after a MiM degree given that one is interested in international banking/financial consulting job profiles.

Aditya-

Great questions, all. The most critical question you ask is: MBA or MSMGT? The answer to your question really lies in your post-grad school plans. If you truly want to be a consultant, particulalry in the finance arena, you will be much better off with the MBA. Why? It's the calling card for consulting firms who recruit to hire their associate level consultants. Try to reverse engineer your career and through research you will discover that most consultants for the top firms have MBAs. You would find it challenging to differentiate yourself with many of the tried-and-true hiring practices which are very well established and in some cases, even visit only specific schools to fish for newly minted MBAs. Ask around and investigate which firms you would like to work for an then find out at which schools these firms recruit. Don't rush into your grad school plans. Better to get a couple of years under your belt and have a better shot at a top school than to get in a degree program now that may inhibit your dreams. having said that, don't forget that schools look at overall leadership and work experience of all kinds, so if your time with the non profit firm was impactful and substantial, you could end up convincing a committee that it will add value in the classroom just as much as your full time WE. It's all in how you packgage yourself. Let us know if we can help.
