Only thing I can see is the parallelism between "the removal of" and "the clearing of."

if it stated "as a result of removing... and clearing surrounding woodlands" it would be accurate.

I agree with the parallelism argument. Additionally, there's an issue with clarity of meaning: "...as a result of removing the native fox population..." suggests that the cottontail rabbit population is what removed the fox population.
