by nafiul9090 » Mon May 23, 2011 8:05 am
According to a 1996 survey by the National Association of College and University Business
Officers, more than three times as many independent institutions of higher education charge
tuition and fees of under $8,000 a year than those that charge over $16,000.
A. than those that charge
B. than are charging
C. than to charge
D. as charge
E. as those charging

i think the question is worthwhile to discuss the comparison issue

oa is D

Hi,
IMO,answer is E . The usage is 'as many X as Y'. So, we are left with D and E. E is better because 'those'(refers to institutions) is essential for apt comparison. Can you please check the OA?
Experts Comments please..

Cheers!

Hi,
I don't think charge and charging need to be parallel here. I think just the ones being compared need to be parallel and 'those' makes the construction parallel with the institutions. Anyway, would be happy if experts comment on this.

Cheers!

whats the source because I think option D would have been better if it would have been

as those that charge

In option E, I think charging is not the right usage.........because initial part of the sentence uses charge and latter part of the sentence uses charging, which I feel is not right usage.........

I also picked Op E between Op D and Op E, not sure about parallelism but i think THOSE is must needed word here...

I feel the answer is E

For comparison we are using AS. But the comparison is Between the independent institutionS. So to compare institutionS with other institutionS(on the basis of their charges to tuition, etc)we need THOSE. If we wont use those we will end up comparing institutions with tuition charges that is not logical.
Also, we need another AS before the second part of the comparison(ie. those....)
So only option with both AS and THOSE is E

However as mentioned before, even i feel the best answer should be as those that charge to maintain parallelism.

What is the source?
