Irrelevant Work Experience

by joefreddy » Sun Mar 09, 2008 10:58 am
Hi,

I have a total of 5 years experience. Out of which the first 4.5 years was in banking sector and 0.5 years which I dont know where to plug in.

3 Years after working with a bank, I got an job offer in a leading IT company as Banking software consultant / analyst. Later joining them realised that this job is going to be a bit technical for the first two years, cos they want me to understand JAVA and MAINFRAME before I get into analst and consulting role. 4 months after joining them realised that Software is something whch I never going to master in my life. I started to look out and got into bank again. Now I have been with a bank for almost 1.5 years which makes a total of 4.5 years banking experience.

My concerns are - Will the college accept my story ?
Will it be a bring down my chances of getting admitted ?
I know I shouldnt hide it but is there a better to way to put this in front of the admission committee?

Thanks.

Dear joefreddy:

You are right in that you do not want to hide your time with the IT company as the admissions committee will ask about the gap in your employment. I think it is best to be honest and state the position required a deeper level of programming than you thought and thus you went back to banking. I don't think it will hurt you or be much of an issue as long as you are upfront about it.

Best of luck!
