Which program would be best for my situation?

by fstep » Wed May 04, 2011 1:49 pm
My experience is running a small-mid size marketing business for 10 years. I'm looking to make the transition from that to working for a large company in the same field (my BA is in an unrelated field). So my choice is:
MBA from Rutgers (ranked around 54) with a marketing concentration
or
Masters in Integrated Marketing from NYU SCPS

Obviously NYU is a much better school but SCPS is one of the lower level schools at NYU (not sure if employers would find out about that but...). Cost is roughly the same (nyu costs a bit more but takes a little less time to finish). Essentially i need to choose the program that will look best to employers combined with my experience.

any advice?

ps. i don't have time to reapply or retake the gmat and try to get in elsewhere.

Given that you are not going to be attending a top 20 school, and that both are in the NYC area and will be known to local employers, I would focus on the curriculum rather than the rankings. In the end, your success will depend on whether you have gotten the skills you need.

You might try checking the schools' websites to see where their graduates end up working. That would tell you whether their students tend to land jobs in your target field. Also, check with the schools to see which employers interview on campus. You can look for student blogs or chat rooms an d try to find out where this year's graduates are going to be working. Finally, if you have a specific employer in mind, you might ask fro an informational interview with the HR department in that company to see what they think of the programs you are choosing between.

Good luck,
