I found this tough and the OG OE no good.
Although various eighteenth and nineteenth-century American poets had professed an interest in Native American poetry and had pretended to imitate Native American forms in their own works, until almost 1900,scholars and critics did not begin seriously to study traditional Native American poetry in native languages.

IMO E

first we have dependent clause in NON-Underlined portion, that means we need a IC now in Underlined portion with a proper subject and verb.
Op C--> passive with inverted subject...moreover critics to begin to study..looks bad
Op B--> Use of Past perfect Incorrect..we have only one action in our IC so can not use P.perfect
Op A--> Begin seriously...does it make sense...after verb..object was needed...what begin?? i mean they begin study thats logical so study should come directly as a noun after verb which is not coming here

For D and E....Concept of Introductory "IT"....My favorite..almost find correct in most of the choices..one example of Introductory "IT"
It is raining...here It refers to nothing but its a valid sentence, same in the case of this question

Now in E, Adverb seriously is correctly placed before verb Begin..and the noun studying is well placed...hence E...

This is my personal view and explanation, i haven't seen OG explanation, if i missed something please add...thanks

Adverb placement is absolutely the issue, including the adverb not in D.

"not until almost" and "not almost until"
