IMO A is correct.

(A) Excited to see penguins for the first time were Danny and his brother, but the zoo had already been closed for an hour when the brothers arrived.
1. Two ICs joined by COMMA + FANBOYS (For/And/Nor/But/Or/Yet/So)
2. were is correct because subject is Danny AND his brother.
3. In the 2nd IC, two events happened.
Zoo was closed (happened earlier), = past perfect
brothers arrived (happened later), = simple past

Well this question is based on Inverted subject and verb agreement...and we all know what this concept is all about when verb comes before subject....some may find the sentences written in a bit awkward way, but m sorry actually sub-verb agreement is the main issue not the awkwardness..

The OA is D guys

Penguin and polar beer requires a plural verb WERE NOT WAS

Now about Op A...there is no OE given and the sentence looks awkward so even i got confuse when i saw this question for the first time..but still the truth is...sub (Danny and his brother) agree with the Verb (were)....moreover, i think we can look at the sentence in this way also..

Danny and his brother were Excited to see penguins for the first time,...bla bla bla

Thanks and its good to see u people enjoying this tricky stuff
