Today anthropologists realize that there is great diversity among hunter-gatherer societies, and those that have persisted into this century had long before been altered by their contacts with agricultural peoples.

We know, between X and Y is used in case of comparison of two X and Y. In this case we should follow the following rule:

We should not use COMMA before AND such as "between X, and Y".

Besides STRICT to the rule: NO COMMA in a LIST of TWO THINGS.

This rule eliminates D and E.

If we see it with keenly, we find that there is a parallelism.

Anthropologists realize that X, and that Y., where X and Y are clauses.

A and B are out for not using COMMA + and THAT

Answer is C.

I agree with you C is the best option here ..... concise parallelism .

I don't understand why you eliminated D and E. D follows the dame parallel construction as C, with the exception that it uses "between' instead. ....there is also a comman before the "and" in choice C. Can you please explain??

I believe only reason why D & E are out is because the use of between.
between is used for two. among is used for more than two.
