Argument: The following appeared as part of an article in a health club trade publication:
"After experiencing a decline in usage by its members, Healthy Heart fitness center built an indoor pool. Since usage did not increase significantly, it appears that health club managers should adopt another approach-lowering membership fees rather than installing expensive new features."
The author's statement that reducing the membership fee will draw more customers to the Healthy Heart fitness centre is not very considerable. Though membership fee is a major criterion for new registrations, there are many other factors which can influence the usage. More study should have been done on additional features like experts' advice, planned diet charts and maintenance of the equipment not only gives an edge above other competitors but also draws more interest.
Firstly, the author does not mention about additional charges to be borne by the customers for the usage of the new indoor pool. It is possible that this expensive feature further increased the fee charged by the fitness Centre. This could have further increased the cost to the existing members and probably discouraged new registrations.
Secondly, the author should have considered about the fitness trainers available. A good professional trainer is an asset to a fitness centre. Fitness trainers motivate the people to target and achieve their goals. Investing in good trainers will increase the interest of the members and the results thus achieved will motivate more to join.
Additionally, the author does not study on offering other additional service such as that of a nutritionist that could increase the usage of the fitness centre. In order to achieve targets set by the members and trainers, fitness activities along with a planned diet would give better and faster results. A nutritionist can tailor make diet charts according to the individual member and thus help in keeping up the interests.
Lastly, the condition of equipment being used should have been taken into account. The author has not thought that usage is directly dependent on the state of the equipment and maintenance of the premises.
The author also states that installing an expensive indoor pool failed to increase the usage and hence indicates that such a big investment did not reap benefits. However, in today's competitive world it is a must to have an edge above fellow competitors in order to flourish. Therefore, in addition to the regular services being rendered to its members, it is also important to keep updated.
The argument would have been more substantial had there been more study on the above mentioned factors. Hence it will not be appropriate to say that new expensive features alone would cause an increase in the usage. Additional facilities like personalised training programs, diet charts and well-kept machines are important features that affect the usage by the members.
