waitlisted.... what should I do now?

by dee123 » Thu Feb 24, 2011 8:20 pm
well, I applied to the sauder school of business at UBC, and I have officially been put on the waitlist. while i'm happy I didn't get a rejection letter, I am really confused as to what to do next. their instuctions are very vague...

this is what they said about whether I should contact them or not:

"At this time we do not require additional documentation from you. However, if you need to update your resume at any time, please feel free to send a new copy to [their email address].
Unfortunately, we are unable to advise you about the likelihood of being moved off the wait list and being given an offer of admission. Please be assured that we will contact you if we require further information or need to request a second interview.
If we decide to move you from the wait list and issue an offer of admission, we will update your online status and send you an email outlining the procedure for accepting an offer."

what does that mean exactly? it doesn't say "don't contact us" but it does say "we do not require further documentation". I have had no big changes to my resume since I sent them my application. I got a big raise at work, but I don't think thats something I could add into a resume because my title and responsibilities stayed the same. So, should I email them? should I send another reference? should I do a campus visit? or should I leave it and just wait for another response?

You should contact the school in case you have any substantial updates from your side such as a promotion, an award, etc. Also, if you have not visited the campus earlier, you should definitely consider a campus visit.

If I don't have any major promotions or awards to report, should I still send them an email or a letter thanking them for continuing to consider my application and explaining why I am a good fit with the program, and letting them know that if they offer my a spot, I will definitely accept?

I only sent in my aplication 1.5 months ago, nothing big has changed, so should I just leave it alone and not send them anything or contact them?

does anyone have any thoughts about sending them an email or a letter just thanking them for continuing to consider my application, and expressing my genuine interest in the program, even if I have no major promotions or awards to report?

Thanks!

An example response letter would be nice. I was WL at Yale and they encourage follow-up but I don't know how to go about doing it. I read the article on this site about letters but a sample letter would be more helpful. If someone has one/link I would really appreciate it!

Three waitlists with me. My approach to the three are/were different.

Boston: Periodic emails about any updates.

Smith: I sent an article about myself, a perspective that was not covered in the admission essays. I also sent another update 2-3 weeks down the line as their review frequency mentioned was on similar lines.

Wakeforest: I contacted the adcom member who interviewed me. she told me that my scores and everything are all above their average. So additional information is not required. Just bide my time and wait to see if they pick me off.

A few notes:
1) Since I haven't converted even one, I cannot say whether this will work. But profess your love for the university. It will help. Also let them know if this is your first and only choice.

2) Dont look at anything and think it is silly information. It would be good to tell them whatever little you achieved. You should also thank them because the waitlist means your profile is okay and they are still interested in you.

One important note: If you receive an email from them again saying you don't have to submit anything more, respect it.
