Unusual Profile

First of all, I would like to thank this amazing oportunity to get some feedback/evaluation about my chances to get into a top tier BS.

- 33 years old former Chilean Navy Officer with 10+ years experience leading work teams (retired 2010).
- Naval Engineering degree with specialization in submarines (submariner).
- One year experience as a Senior Project Manager at Ministry of Interior, Chile.
- Equivalent GPA +/- 3.2
- Realistically targeting GMAT 700

My goal is to succesfully change my career path through an MBA. I want to acquire some experience in real estate and finances (which I am doing right now) and, in a medium term, start my own real estate company and further develop the family real estate business.

What do you think are my chances???

Your GMAT score, of course, will be important, but overall you should be a strong candidate. You should stress what you can bring to the classroom that differs from what the recent graduate with 3 years' experience with an investment bank can bring. You have managed teams. You have worked in government. You come from a country that does not have thousands of applicants to US b-schools.

You need to think very hard about your career change. Schools are understandably leery of people who seem to be using an MBA to get out of a bad situation. You need to persuade them that you know what you want, why you want it, and why you will be good at it. The facts that you have a family business in real estate and that you are getting experience in the field now will work in your favor.

You are definitely an alternative candidate, but that is your strong suit. Don't try to position yourself as looking like all the other candidates. Admissions officers are looking for applicants who can broaden the class' perspective. That should make you attractive.

That said, recognize that the top tier schools reject 80-90% of their applicants - from an outstanding applicant pool. No one is guaranteed admittance. Nevertheless, you are the type of candidate who should be applying, you simply need to be sure to tell your story clearly and persuasively. You may want to use an admissions consultant to help you put your case in the strongest possible form.
