Timing Dilemma

by getmba2013 » Sun Jan 30, 2011 4:11 pm
Fellow MBA-hopefuls,

Despite this being my first post under this moniker, I am a longtime member of the community. I now have a dilemma, and am turning to your fine minds for advice.

Seven years ago, I was diagnosed with a degenerative disc disease called spinal stenosis. The condition has resulted in recurring herniated discs and, thus, much pain. Although I had surgery on 2 discs years ago, I now am back to square one, and need a surgery again. This time, however, it will be fairly major, and I will be bedridden for up to six weeks.

I have been fortunate to already receive one admit, and have 2 interviews scheduled over the next 2 weeks. I am waiting on about 5 other schools, including several of my top choices.

I need surgery fast, and unfortunately cannot wait until I hear back from each school. I am thinking about calling them to inform them, in the hopes that if I was to be considered for an interview, we can schedule it before I go to the hospital.

Not sure what to do...any thoughts?

In advance, thank you!

I'm sorry to hear about your condition and I hope the surgery goes well. I know you mentioned you would be on bedrest after the surgery. Will you be able to conduct a phone interview from your bed? Personally, I would not advise telling the Adcom of your condition. It just doesn't seem relevant and some may worry that you are trying to play the "pity" card (or that you might have issues in the future which could impact your performance, etc.). Obviously, the Adcom is not allowed to discriminate on this matter, but, I just don't see the advantage of telling.

If you are called for an interview and unable to complete it via phone, you can explain your situation at that time and see if it can be postponed (there is usually a few week window of time for interviews). If you do not believe you will be able to speak via phone for a full six weeks then it might make sense to let the adcom know your situation. I wouldn't go into detail. Simply say that you are having a medical procedure which will prohibit you from interviewing from x date to y date. Express your interest in interviewing and let them know that you would be available up until x.

Hope that helps! And, GOOD LUCK! (and congrats on your admittance!)
