Profile Eval Please

Hello,

Here goes:

Schools Applied to (R2): Kellogg, Fuqua, Goizueta, Owen

720 GMAT (47Q, 41V), 5.5 AWA

Undergraduate: Vanderbilt University, BA Economics; Minor: Management - Corporate Strategy (lots of Finance)

Undergrad GPA: 3.21, although I spent 3 semesters pre-med and had to climb out of a 2.9 from that.

Work Experience: Here is my biggest concern. I am only 24 and will have only 26 months of professional experience come enrollment in the fall. I am a Financial Advisor with American International Group (AIG) and have been fairly successful. Clearly, this is my biggest cause for concern and am wondering if due to this fact on my resume, I will be immediately ruled out from a school such as Kellogg or even Fuqua.

Rec letters from my district manager, a senior FA in my office and a family business friend.

I was a fraternity man in college and spent several semesters in leadership positions (recruitment chair, pledge class president). I also have done some volunteer work both in school and since graduating.

I know that my GMAT looks good, my GPA is a bit low, and my work experience is definitely low; however, I am highly personable and articulate and therefor believe that interviews will strongly help my case. I believe my essays will be a strong part of my application. They are unique and give a good look into who I am and why I stand out. My father, a successful business man, Harvard grad and CEO, passed away this past year unexpectedly and left me as trustee of his assets and essentially I have had to lead my 4 older siblings, 2 younger siblings and step-mother since his passing -- this was a big part of my essay writing.

I know this is a bit lengthy and your evaluation will be highly subjective, but any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Best,

Alex

Hi Alex,

I think your self assessment is on target. Clearly I haven't seen your essays so cannot comment on them, but your GMAT score is good and I actually think your GPA is probably fine if you were able to improve over time.

Your work experience is not long, but if you have been able to show career progress, leadership and management experience (as well as maturity) in that time I think you are still a viable candidate. The process really is holistic, so candidates are not immediately ruled out for a single weakness.

Good luck!

Are you kidding me??? I would be very surprised if you were not admitted to all of those schools. Best of luck!
