590 (Q47, V24) Back to square one

I appeared on 17th Jan and got 590 Q47, V24. Very much disappointed. But would like to share my story.

I am a Mechanical Engineer with 16 years of working experience. I have a reasonably good career going on. Rose through various ranks pretty quickly and holding a leadership position.

Three months back, I thought to invest in myself and add value to my profile with an MBA degree (may be an EMBA) from a topmost business school.
When started to lgather information about GMAT, I was very fortunate to find Beat the GMAT on the very first day. I never saw any other site or any other course. I followed the experience of Eric because I liked it very much.
After a gap of 16 years I was going to do some serious study hence I needed a good push.
Gave my first practice test without prepeartion and got 590 (Q44, V28). I felt that with some study and practise I should be able to score 700+.
I studied Princeton, Manhattan SC and OG11. Prepared seriously for one month. Started getting scores of 620, 640. But I never got a chance to give the test on the simulated condition, always had some disturbances. Hence I thought, on the actual test I would certainly do better.

Experience on test day was good. I was worried about AWA but both essays went well. Quanta started with a real hard one lost some time there, but managed to finish the section 1 min before the scheduled time. My main worry was Verbal where I was consistantly scoring low during practice. But it started very well. I was able to indentify errors and comfortably getting the answers. Two RC's went very well. At aound Q20 I was very well placed with respect to timing, suddenly I lost my concentration was actually started thinking about getting 700. I lost some crucial time. Suddenly found myself in trouble with only 12 min remaining for last 12 questions and I got a big RC. I panicked. Had to guess all the questions thereafter.
Finally score appeared. It was same score from where I started. I know I do not deserve this score, specially my wife and children deserved better score for their unconditional support to me during last two month. You can imagine after working for 12 hrs and preparing for this exam how much time I could spent with my family.
My aim is to do 1year MBA from a topmost business school. Shall I apply with this score or shall I give one more chance. OR FORGET IT.

i'm sorry to hear the news. i encourage you to study and take the test again! do not apply with that score--i believe your chance will be low at top tier schools.

sounds like you were doing well until you hit the big RC question. i say give yourself another month; do at least 4-5 full length simulations mixed with untimed practice problems and take the test again (assuming this timeframe works). i'm sure your family is proud of you regardless of your score.
