Applying to Columbia

Hi,

I just basically wanted to know if I should think about applying to Columbia (I want to apply to Harvard as well but realize I might not have the right criteria). I am 22 years old and my undergraduate GPA was a 3.8. I have been involved in the family construction business since high school and recently started a company that provides solar power equipment to small cities in Pakistan. I am involved in many social and political organizations. My GMAT score is a 680 and I don't know if I should take it again. What else would I need to apply to Columbia? Do you think I would have a chance or is it out of my reach?

Hi Sanu786,

It sounds like you have the potential to be a strong applicant directly out of college. There are a few other forum members who have successfully applied directly from undergrad and may be able to share their experiences.

What I see that is interesting in your profile is both a strong GPA and starting your own company. If you have other strong attributes to contribute to your application, I think it's worth trying. I'm not sure why you decided against HBS, I think there could be some interest in your profile, though there is certainly no such thing as a guarantee at either HBS or Columbia.

I would re-take the GMAT again if you have the time. As an applicant with less work experience, the academics take on a larger role in your process.
