another tricky DS

by Night reader » Thu Dec 02, 2010 4:58 am
At Company X, is the number of employees who work part-time greater than the number of employees who have worked for the company for at least five years?

(1) Of the employees who work part-time, 60 percent have not worked for the company for at least Â…five years.
(2) Of the employees who have worked for the company for at least Â…five years, 70 percent do not work part-time.

(1) Of the employees who work part-time, 60 percent have not worked for the company for at least Â…five years.
(2) Of the employees who have worked for the company for at least Â…five years, 70 percent do not work part-time.
Let A be Total Part time Working Employee
B be Total at least Â…five years worked employees in Company X.

(1)
0.6A Part time Employee Not at least 5 yrs,
0.4A Part time Employee at least with 5 yrs

We cannot say if the the number of employees who work part-time greater than the number of employees who have worked for the company for at least five years as we have no info about the At least 5 yrs working employees .

Not Sufficient.

(2)
0.7B Not Part time with at least 5 yrs,
0.3B Part time with at least 5 yrs.

We cannot say if the the number of employees who work part-time greater than the number of employees who have worked for the company for at least five years as we have no info about the Part time employees .

Not Sufficient.

Combine both (See Red ones)

0.4A = 0.3B

Then A/B = 3/4 (Sufficient)

By the ratio we can say that B>A thus
Total at least Â…five years worked employees > Total Part time Working Employee.

IMO C

I haven't touched MGMAT CATs yet; these MOCs should bring me headache unless I kill all questions on my agenda beforehand.

i have to agree on that "these cats are absolutely lethal." They will expose even tiny chinks in your fundamentals. But they are a good way to gauge how you are performing..

If you have a date within 2 months I suggest that you do these after every alternate week.Save GMATPrep for the last couple of weeks!
