Red and White Marbles

by rishikeshranga » Tue Nov 16, 2010 10:59 pm
A jar contains 8 red marbles and y white marbles. If Joan takes 2 random marbles from the jar, is it more likely that she will have 2 red marbles than that she will have one marble of each color?

(1) y ≤ 8
(2) y ≥ 4

a.Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
b.Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
c.Both statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER one ALONE is sufficient.
d.EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
e.Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

Can anybody help?

question seems to be
is probability of RR>RC
ie
8c2>8c1 x yc1
28>8 x YC1
3.5>YC1

now st 1)
y<=8
lets take y=1
1c1=1.... is it greater than 3.5? no

lets take y=8
8c1 is 8
is it greater than 3.5? yes
double case
insuff

st 2
y>=4
lets take y=4(extreme)
4c1=4 is it greater than 3.5 yes
for what ever the value of y>4 value will be greater than 3.5
so sufficient

so B
