Choice for 3rd Recommender

by hn1234 » Sat Nov 13, 2010 5:58 am
Hi There

One of my targetuniversity requires 3 recommenders. I am having concerns about choosing an ideal 3rd recommender. The first two recommenders are my current supervisor and my supervior from my last job. The potential choice for the 3rd one and the reason is as follows:

Old Client: One of my major clients, whom i have helped in structuring and restructuring many deals. He can give a good outlook on my technical abilities, my client management skills and my diligent approach to work.

Dean and Director of University: Though my academic interaction with him is very limited, he knows me because I initiated and organized an international level conference, which was praised by ministers and academicians from across the region and gathered accolades for the university to groom students in organizing such event. He can give a view on my leadership ability to concieve the idea and leadership qualities in organizing it.

Another ex supervisor: Same old same old how i managed projects and how i was a super employee.

Would appreciate your perspective on the choice for a 3rd recommender, and if you think i should consider someone out of the list as a choice.

Regards

Dear hn1234,

I would not pick another former supervisor, but opt for someone who can give a slightly different perspective of you. I think the client sounds like a good choice or the Dean from your university. You don't want to go too far back in time, so pick someone that you have worked with recently, like within the last 3 years. You can also ask a trusted co-worker or colleague to be a recommender (referred to as a peer recommendation by some schools). Just be sure anyone you ask will say positive things about you.

Good luck,
Lisa

Thanks Lisa

I think i will go with the client, as i have graduated 5 years back so the dean mite not be a good option, and since the target school is HBS and they discourage peer recommendation so would not want a colleagues recommendation.

Thanks for your help
