Profile Evaluation

Hey Stacy/Lisa,

I am new to the forums..mostly because I have been putting off applying for graduate school do to a terrible GPA. I bet you've never heard that story before? haha. Anyways, here is a little about me and any feedback/criticism/subtle dream-dashing is greatly appreciated.

Schools: Any in the top 20 - Univ. of Texas and Berkeley would be ideal.

GMAT: 720

GPA: 2.5

Designations: CPA, CFA (Level 1) Complete

Work experience: Will be 4 years when I apply. 2 of the largest finance companies in the industry; I am in Mutual fund wholesaling now and have taken roles of progressive responsibility.

I am hoping that passing the CPA and the first part of the CFA helps add some academic credibility. I thought I was going into the family business after college so I spent more time socializing than doing schoolwork. Should I take some undergrad classes part time while I work (Do grad schools even consider these)? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Dear PB,

Your GMAT score and certifications do help to show your aptitude, but I do think taking 2-3 courses will strengthen your application further. Doing well in some undergraduate coursework now, while working, will show your ability to excel in the classroom and a commitment to your education. It won't affect your GPA, but it will assuage concerns on how you might perform in a class. I strongly encourage you to take a college algebra and/or calculus class as math courses are the best preparation for business school. You can take these courses at your local community college or university; online courses are also acceptable. You just need to be able to submit a transcript showing the grade you earned.

Other than that, your profile is competitive for a top 20. Although, you do not note any extracurricular or community activities which is also an important component in your evaluation. Don't discount the importance of your essays, recommendations and interview in the process--use these to your advantage in making your case for a seat in the class.
