even numbers

by kushal.adhia » Sat Nov 06, 2010 3:26 am
Does set S contain any even numbers?

1) There are no prime numbers in S.

2) There are no multiples of 4 in S.

Why is the answer not D?

Stmt 1 says that there are no prime numbers in S; so S contains the numbers 1, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10
As seen, even numbers are present in the set

Stmt 2 says that there are no multiples of 4 in S; S can contain 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 9..
Again even numbers are present in the set

(1) S can be {4, 6, 8, 9} or S can be {9, 15, 21}. So S may or may not contain even numbers.
So, (1) is NOT SUFFICIENT.

(2) S can be {2, 3, 5, 6} or S can be {3, 5, 7, 9}. So S may or may not contain even numbers.
So, (1) is NOT SUFFICIENT.

Combining also, we cannot answer the question.
Hence, E is the correct answer.
