730 GMATPrep (first test).. and strategy

by deltasquare » Wed Jan 02, 2008 1:32 am
I haven't started my prep for GMAT. I gave my first test today for pre-evaluation and scored 730 (Q48, V41) (GMATPrep software).

In my quick post test analysis I found the following.

**I got the highest number of wrong answers in SC (9 wrong out of 16 presented) and DS (7 wrong out of 15 presented). I need help from the forum on material that is recommended for these.. how is the DS in OG 11?

**RC (0 errors): Are the passages in GMATPrep too easy? And I found I'm okay in PS (2 errors in attempted 18 + 2 wrong guesses). Should I buy Kaplan 800 for practice from here and skip the PS questions in OG 11 completely?

**I'm thinking of using the Manhattan SC book for Sentence correction

Kindly provide your comments about the material that is good for preparing Data sufficiency and Sentence Correction? Thanks in advance..

You're off to a great start! MGMAT is great for SC. For DS, I recommend either the MGMAT quant books or Kaplan 800. For practice, go with Official Guide material.

Best of luck, please keep us updated. It seems like you're a natural at this test. :)

Great starting score. Be aware that looking at the number of questions right / wrong on one test may be slightly misleading. The test gives you easier or harder questions as you get things right or wrong throughout the test, and this can have the effect of giving you a higher proportion of, say, harder SC questions and easier RC questions on any particular test. Another time, you may have a harder mix of RC and an easier mix of SC, just depending upon how things play out in that test.

With RC, your comfort and familiarity with the subject of a particular passage can also play a strong role. If you happen to get 3 or 4 passages on topics you like or know a little something about, your job is easier. If you get a passage on some very esoteric or technical topic that you neither know nor like, it gets a lot harder.
